Press Release Body = Lisbon, 19th December 2006 - Pompeii was once a city of the ancient Roman Empire situated about 22km from the modern Naples, in Italy. The ancient city was destroyed after the Vesúrio Volcano irrupted in the 79 after Christ. The eruption provoked an intense cloud of ashes that completely covered the city, which was only discovered, by chance, 1600 years later.
Mud and ashes molded the victim's bodies, allowing them to be found in the exact shape they were, when they got hit by the eruption.
Since then, the excavations have transformed the location into an extraordinary archeological site, allowing a detailed view of life in a city of Ancient Rome.
About Pompeii Visits
One of the most famous ex-cities of the world, Pompeii was destroyed in 79AD by the unexpected eruption of Vesuvius, a volcano on the foothills where it had been built. In an incredibly short space of time the city was completely obliterated, submerged by a thick layer of volcanic ash that froze the last few moments of the lives of its citizens for all time.

Volcanologically speaking, Vesuvius is actually a fairly uncommon type of volcano, a double one with the smaller active volcano lodged within the crater of another much older one. It has erupted several times since its most famous tantrum in 79AD, including several times in the 20th century, providing us with some really striking photographs of nature at its most powerful.
